Dave Southwood is a photographer who has concerned himself with many aspects of the medium and how it is consumed.

His photos can be viewed at The South African National Gallery, The Finnish Museum of Photography, The Christoph Merian Stiftung, The Spier Art Collection and private collections in South Africa and abroad.

His work made up part of three shows at The South African National Gallery in 2010, two of which were broad surveys of South African art.

In 2003 he was awarded first prize by the Bauhaus for an interdisciplinary project which he co-authored. Three short films he made about some architecture were shown at the Venice Biennale of Architecture in 2010. These two projects are representative of a deep concern for architecture and cities which culminated in a project called citiesincrisis which he co-curated.

He has contributed to, and been featured in, publications like Adbusters, COLORS and Wallpaper, and has edited photo editions of magazines. He has taught at Universities and written for the art press.

Together with some black photographers he set up the first non-profit organisation for ‘street photographers’ in the Western Cape called Umlilo in 2000. He still works with these freelancers.

It started in the late eighties. I was walking around the Market Theatre and managed to get my hands on a sea-water damaged Minolta Dynax. There was no risk that it was going to work ever again but I hung it around my neck regardless and strutted around feeling like the coolest person ever. In all honesty I haven't gotten rid of that feeling, and for quite a few years now my cameras have actually worked!!!

For years thereafter my friend and I got around taking pix and making a right nuisance of ourselves. We snuck in - and got chucked out of - quite a few places. Homeless haunts, cemeteries and derelict landmarks like Turbine Hall and the old Gasworks in Jo'burg were considered fair game. I have a blurry picture where I nearly got run over by the Knysna Choo-Tjoe whilst wandering the line.

At some stage during the late nineties I realized that my medical aid wouldn't pay for a lobotomy and the writing was on the wall that I wouldn't survive much longer in my accidental IT career. I got married to a remarkable woman, took time off to study photography formally, fathered twin-girls, screwed up the photography for by best friends wedding, photographed people, animal, vegetable and mineral, moved to Cape Town, sent out a lot of mails, knocked on a whole lot of doors, and met a whole lot of great people.

Possibly, but not necessarily in that order.

In a tumultuous world of fluctuating markets, mood-swings, Viagra, The Web 2.0, viral marketing, capitalism, minimalism, post modernism, DTP, P2P, DHL, HIV, CSI and millionaire African heirs who'd love to share their good fortunes with you if you'd permit them to deposit the money in your bank account, the reassuring sound of the shutter, Tom Waits' growl from my iPod, the smile from my girls, the aroma from a perfectly drawn espresso and the fact that my wife hasn't kicked me out yet is the reason why I'm excited with life every day.

I do, as they say in Japan - "Take Photo"

So right up, I’ll most likely tell you that I’m a hugger.  I love people, faces, interaction, moments and I’ve always been keen on photography as long as I can remember. At age 12 I was given my first camera, and was hooked. After high school I attended Pretoria Technikon for a 3-year photography diploma.  Thereafter a 2 year gap found me documenting all the places I visited like Alaska, South America, Mexico & Europe.

Returning to South Africa I based myself in Cape Town assisting international photographers for several years and then went to Hamburg to carry on assisting and apprenticeships. I returned to Johannesburg two years later in 2004 where I started shooting for magazines like Cosmo, Elle, SL, FHM, True Love, Men’s Health and by natural progression started shooting advertising commissions with The Jupiter Drawing Room, TBWA, Y&R, JWT and Ogilvy.  I’m happy to be based in Cape Town and commute to my regular clients in Johannesburg and wherever the story takes me.

There is nothing more essential to me than capturing a moment that tells a thousand stories.  My many travels have exposed my love for landscapes and ever changing face of humanity.  This is what I love to do, and do it with passion to achieve capturing that essential ultimate moment in time.  Act now, act with purpose, do it with conviction and intuition and you have something special.

Award-winning stylist and sibling team Mari-Louis Guy and Callie Maritz's latest book on all things baked  "Cakebread Pudding&Pie" will hit the shelves in July and judging by early media interest, looks set to be another winner. Their first "Cakes to Celebrate Love and Life" has won the Gourmand World Book Award for Best Dessert book (South-Africa 2009) and is currently in its fourth print for English and third for the Afrikaans version.  In 2010 they completed a general cookbook for Hamilton's advertising and Food Lover's Market title "Love & Food".  Unique in the sense that they develop their own recipes, write and style their own content, their food-styling career spans print media from magazines to billboards, television advertising, in-store videos, catalogues and recipe-development and pack-styling for supermarket brands.
A "thought to food" series they shot on "Boerewors" in 2009 with photographer Melody Deas won 3rd place in the International Photography Awards in the Advertising Food Category and subsequently appeared on the cover of Foto & Video Russia.  Equally at home in front of camera, they have made several appearances on South-African television as food specialists.  Stylists by trade and bakers by nature, they have collaborated with some of SA's best dress designers to design, bake and style cakes and desserts for celebrity weddings, hotel openings and media events.

Collaborating as a creative team since 1995, Markus Klinko & Indrani began their professional lives at early ages in very different fields.

MARKUS KLINKO

French-Hungarian Markus Klinko was born in Switzerland, the son of a French Horn player, and began piano at 3. He spent his teens studying harp in Paris at the National Conservatory.
Markus had an illustrious career as one of the world’s preeminent classical harp soloists. He was the first harpist with a major recording label contract, and released award-winning albums for EMI Classic, and played concerts around the globe. In 1994, after receiving the “Grand Prix du Disque” (European equivalent to a Grammy) for his last recording with the Paris Opera Bastille Orchestra, Markus decided to follow his passion to begin a career in photography. Two weeks later he met Indrani and they began their extraordinary relationship and creative collaboration.

INDRANI

Indo-Canadian photographer, director and digital artist, Indrani Pal-Chaudhuri was born in Calcutta, India. To pursue her childhood love of photography, Indrani began a successful career as a fashion model at 14 in Toronto, and traveled the globe to work with great photographers and artists, while studying arts philosophy and meditation at monasteries along the way. She then co-founded a charitable education foundation in her ancestral home, which she has supported passionately for 16 years (see Philanthropy SEEschool.org below).  Indrani studied Anthropology at Princeton University, and graduated with High Honors, while mastering digital post-production art and developing her professional photography career together with Markus in Paris and NY.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Markus and Indrani’s work was discovered by fashion icon Isabella Blow, who gave them their first magazine cover, and by David Bowie and Iman who commissioned their first album art and book cover.

They then created award-winning covers for Beyonce for her solo debut ‘Dangerously in Love’, Mariah Carey for ‘Emancipation of Mimi’ and Mary J Blige for ‘The Breakthrough’, each of which became turning points in their careers and top selling albums of the year. Numerous prestigious editorials and award-winning ad campaigns followed. The duo’s recent subjects include Kate Winslet, Katie Holmes, Eva Mendes, Anne Hathaway, Will Smith, Elijah Wood, Lady Gaga, Alicia Keys, Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera, Keanu Reeves, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Val Kilmer, Serena Williams, Jay-Z, and Kanye West. Their advertising clients include Elizabeth Arden, Hugo Boss, Anna Sui, Shiseido, L’Oreal Paris, Pepsi, Nike, Puma, Pantene, Baume-et-Mercier, De Beers; and their work is seen in numerous publications including Flaunt, Rolling Stone, Interview, V Magazine, Vanity Fair and Vogue.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT “As a multi-media duo who embrace collaboration with creative partners’ opposing viewpoints, our work embodies a multiplicity of perspectives. Our images are born of conflict, negotiation, and love. We collaborate closely with our subjects, to understand them and be inspired by their reality, their fantasies and artistry. We empower them to move freely through our multiple exposures, which we combine for their truest expression, movement and being. ”—Indrani

DOUBLE EXPOSURE

The duo and their creative team were the subjects of the Bravo docu-series ’’Double Exposure’’ following their artistic adventures on photo shoots with celebrity and fashion stars Lady Gaga, Dita Von Teese, Lindsay Lohan, Kim Kardashian, Naomi Campbell and others. They invited the audience to share in their creative process, bringing out the charisma of their collaborators while poking fun at themselves.

“Double Exposure” premiered in the US on Bravo in the summer of 2010. It airs in Canada on Cosmo TV, in Australia on Arena TV, premiering January 10, 2011, and in South Africa on Vuzu.
