Photographers : Melanie Cleary

Having worked in the South African commercials, features and service facility film industry for six years as a technician, behind the scenes photographer, commercial and advertising photographer, this nurtured Melanie’s ability to capture and create beautiful images and to tell stories.

The transition from moving pictures to stills images was effortless, and because she understands the dynamics of how a film set works, she is still regularly found on sets doing commissioned advertising photography.

Melanie says, “I try to look for special moments that always present themselves at the most unexpected time.  Whether it’s the light on the hills, or an expression on a persons face, I want to capture that essence.”

In 2005, working with writer Karena du Plessis, Melanie took on the epic project of photographing one of her first loves – the Overberg, to create the coffee table book, The Overberg – Inland from the tip of Africa, published by Struik in which awesome examples of her ability to capture evocative images of people and landscapes are a testament of her passion for what she does.

Melanie’s clients include; Motorola, Braun, Emirates, World Wide, Twix, Wustenrot, Microsoft, Waitrose, Nicorettes, Tropizina, Barilla Pasta, Mastercard, Nikon and Hoyes C amongst others.
A woman inspired by heaven and earth, with her feet rooted firmly in knowing who she is, Melanie’s work is a constant reminder of the beauty that can be found in simple things and the awe inspiring complexity seen in human nature.
